The site of the old salmon cannery at Hoonah has been transformed into one of the most unique and special destinations available to Alaskan cruisers. The old cannery complex has been restored and a working line is available for visitors to watch the canning process as it was in the salmon heyday. A magnificent, new cultural center, seafood restaurants, shopping complex and nature trail system have been added to the original cannery buildings. Numerous ship and shore activities are available affording visitors immediate access to the rich waters of Icy Strait and the beautiful Tongass National Forest on Chichagof Island. The city of Hoonah is located just over a mile from the port and welcomes all of the visitors to come and explore the local shops, eateries and attractions. There are excellent opportunities to see eagles and on occasion, whales and other sea life from the shoreline along the road between the port and town. On good weather days, it is a beautiful walk. |
