Wildlife Viewing and Photography

Icy Strait provides abundant wildlife viewing opportunities from the water. Eagles congregate by the hundred in late May and early June feeding on the schools of herring that move in to spawn in the shallow bays and inlets in the area. Humpback whales, sea lions, seals, deer, bear and a myriad of sea birds are common sights in the area. We see most if not all of the available species on a single day cruise of the local waters.

The great eagle photo at the right is compliments of Deborah Duke, taken in July 2008. The eagle below wasc caught by Sandra Ellis in August 2009.

From May through September humpback whales are constantly cruising the local waters and make for a wonderful experience watching them play, feed and frolic. On occasions when our travels take us out from town playful sea otters are often spotted satisfying their voracious appetites on shellfish and crab.

 beach bears

We commonly find a brown bear or two picking their way along the shoreline in search of a meal. These beautiful animals are symbols of the raw and unspoiled wilderness that is Alaska.

Orca are regular visitors to the local waters as well.
